Creating Safe, Vibrant, Livable Neighborhoods
in Cascade County for 10 Years!

Great Falls Weed & Seed

"Weed and Seed" is a community revitalization strategy, created by the U.S. Department of Justice, which encourages communities to 'weed' out violent crime, gang activity, drug use and drug trafficking and 'seed' the area neighborhoods with social and economic revitalization. GFWS also works to develop programs that foster local leadership to sustain these solutions. First federally designated in 2002, Great Falls Weed and Seed is one of only two Weed and Seed sites in Montana. (The other site was on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Lame Deer, MT.)

Great Falls Weed and Seed (GFWS) serves as a catalyst to connect people, resources and organizations to build safe, vibrant and livable neighborhoods in historic Great Falls and Black Eagle. The program takes a holistic, collaborative approach to community policing, crime prevention and community revitalization in Cascade County.

GFWS is governed by a Steering Committee, a public-private partnership of city, county and federal agencies, as well as human service organizations and area residents. The U.S. Attorney for the state of Montana, Mike Cotter, is the honorary chair of the Committee.  The Steering Committee sets the programmatic goals for GFWS; NeighborWorks Great Falls is our fiscal agent. Each year, the Steering Committee collaborates, in a way that no other organization in Cascade County can, to identify unmet neighborhood needs and gaps in service in our target areas. Through contracts and the work of the Site Director, GFWS provides funding and technical assistance to residents and agencies, serving as a catalyst for community solutions.
